Five Magic Spindles | A Rooglewood Fairy-Tale Contest

"I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream
I know you, the gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleam
Yet I know it's true that visions are seldom all they seem
But if I know you, I know what you'll do
You'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream"
Music by Tchaikovsky
Lyrics by Sammy Fain and Jack Lawrence

Fellow Inklings, I have an exciting little cover-reveal for today! But more than that, it is a fairy-tale contest reveal, and it comes from Rooglewood Press, so I am super pumped about sharing it with you all. To top it off, it is the reveal of a fairy-tale I've only recently watched the Disney animation for, and am really loving at the moment. . . *smiles happily*

So without any further ado. . .
*drums roll*
Are you ready?!
(Actually if you follow any of the blogs I follow, you'll probably already know what it is. . . I am always so late to post these delightful reveals. But anyhow!)
*think of a contest of a pink and blue dress*
*and wands*
*and a prince and his horse*
*and a beautiful princess*
*a bad fairy witch whose name starts with M*
. . . and spindles!

Yes, you guessed it!

Dear readers, Rooglewood Press is delighted to introduce their second fairy tale novella contest—
Five Magic Spindles
a collection of “Sleeping Beauty” stories
OH MY! Isn't the cover absolutely GORGEOUS? *sighs deeply*
I love it so much!!
The challenge is to write a retelling of the beloved fairy tale in any genre or setting you like. Make certain your story is recognizably “Sleeping Beauty,” but have fun with it as well. Make it yours!

Rooglewood Press will be selecting five winners to be published in the Five Magic Spindles collection, which will be packaged up with the phenomenal cover you see here. Maybe your name will be one of the five listed?

All the contest rules and information (how to enter, story details, deadline etc.) may be found on the Rooglewood Press website. Just click HERE and you will go right to the page.

Rooglewood Press’s first collection, Five Glass Slippers is available for purchase, and our second collection, Five Enchanted Roses is scheduled to launch on July 27, and is currently available for pre-order. Be certain to get a copy of each and see what previous winners did with their wonderful retellings.

So friends, what do you think? I was so thrilled when I heard what the fairy-tale was about, and saw the gorgeous cover. . . also, Sarah showed me the animated Disney adaption of "Sleeping Beauty" for the first time last week, and I just fell in love with the three little good fairies! It is such a medieval, mythical classic story, and I love how the Prince fights Maleficent to reach the princess (I know, this is probably not quite like in the original Grimm Brothers' tellings of the tale, but still, it's awful sweet!). Were it not that I was bound so tightly to my studies this year, I would so try to enter this contest. As it is, I might see if I can work on a short-story or something. . . I mean, it is sooo tempting! What do you all think? Would you try to write a retelling of the classic fairy-tale Sleeping Beauty?

  1. Yaay! I definitely plan on entering. : D Two ideas spring to mind... but I'll have to see where they go from there! : D

  2. Hi, Joy! I would like to enter. I entered the Beauty and the Beast contest last year, and enjoyed the opportunity to practice crafting a short story. Sleeping Beauty seems a harder one for a retelling, but I have a couple ideas. We'll see if they go anywhere... :)

  3. I am so excited for this contest, and I am definitely planning on entering! I already have an idea, but it's still very fuzzy so I'm mulling over it before I begin to flesh it out on paper. I, too, love the Disney version, and really all Disney movies, but sadly the contest judges don't want to see retellings of the Disney version. Still, that's forced me to reacquaint myself with the older versions of the story, and I've found that they are just as delightful and offer so many variations. I can't wait to start writing!

  5. Allison, that is great! All the best with your writing, my dear :)!

  6. Esther, that's great! If I wasn't so busy with my schooling, I would definitely try to enter. "Sleeping Beauty" is a more challenging fairy tale, but it has so much potential as well, because it has virtually been left unexplored by the majority of writers. All the best with your efforts! :)

  7. Ana, that's fantastic! Ah, yes, I noticed the same criteria, and that definitely does make it far more challenging, but also I think it is very exciting to have the stories influenced by the original fairy-tale :D. I would love to write up a story for the contest, but we'll see how that goes with the limited time I have due to my studies. All the best with your writing! :)
